I saw the 'LOOPER' movie last week and started to think deeply about the 'time-travel'. I always thought how can we go to future or past by traveling faster like light as they are showing in every movies. Now I can realize and confirm one thing. That it is a WRONG idea or assumption !
So why do I say this?
If we travel more than the speed of light we see the time dilates (expands) to keep down our speed, not to exceed that of light (as per Einstein's special relativity theory). Note that this time dilation is an experience only for the object/person who travels in such speeds.
Now consider this case. A man around 30 age is made to travel faster than light away from earth (say he is orbiting the sun in a spaceship for quite a long period). Now after 20 years in earth we again slow down and land the spacecraft in earth. Now because of time dilation he has not completed his 20 years in space (say he has completed only 10 years). So can this be considered that he has reached the PAST??? .. Definitely NO. We can only say that he stays younger like 40 age (when he is actually completing 50 years in earth calender). So he cannot have a PAST in earth (as shown in movie).

That makes sense, yes! But, this effect of velocity on time is almost a proven fact now. I believe the concept of time travel depends on a much wilder theory of parallel universes. The hypothesis is that, there is another dimension to space/reality which paves the way to an infinite number of universes parallel to ours which exist in different time periods to ours. So, we might be able to travel in time by traveling to a different universe which is similar to ours in almost every way except for the time period and the time traveler who is now an anomaly.. :P
