TamilNadu Facts

The Tamil people number around 74 million in the world. Of that, there are about 63,000,000 in India; about 3,600,000 live in Sri Lanka; about 1,500,000 live in Malaysia; and about 250,000 live in Singapore. The remaining Tamil people live in many other places. Other peoples are related to the Tamil people by language, culture, and anscestry. The art and culture of Tamils are among the oldest in the world.
Following are the position of TamilNadu:

1. Largest urban agglomeration nationwide. (43.86%) 2. Second lowest decadal growth in population in India. 3. Fifth largest economy among the states of India. TamilNadu's gross state domestic product for 2004 is estimated at $56 billion in current prices. 4. Tamil Nadu is also the second most industrialized state next to Maharashtra 5. It ranks second in per capita income (2004-2005) among large states 6. It ranks third in foreign direct investment approvals (cumulative 1991-2002) of Rs.225,826 million ($5,000 million), next only to Maharashtra (Rs.366,024 million ($8,100 million)) and Delhi (Rs.303,038 million ($6,700 million). 7. Chennai is the fourth largest city of India and the state capital. 8. Chennai is the home of Marina Beach, one of longest beaches in the world. (2nd longest beach) 9. Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Salem, Thirunelveli and Tiruppur are other large cities (Corporations) of Tamil Nadu. IN EDUCATION: 10. It has the highest number of vocational training institutions in India. (Approx 250 Engg Colleges). Edible Stuffs: 11. At present Tamil Nadu is India's second biggest producer of rice, next to Punjab where there is perennial source of irrigation. Tamil Nadu is the home to Dr. M.S. Swaminathan(researching felllow in Agricultural University- Coimbatore), known as the "father of the Green Revolution" in India. 12. The town of Namakkal is also known as the Poultry hub of India.
